Where we stand
We have one allegiance: India. We belong to no party and no camp, left or right. Our criticism is constructive — meant to strengthen the country, never to diminish it — and we press, as citizens, on the problems no party will own. Read our stand in full.
Our editorial line
Report every index we track, including the ones where India ranks poorly. Lead with the trajectory rather than the position: what moved, by how much, over what period, and what drove it. Attribute every figure to the body that published it. Where a number is disputed, contested or methodologically criticised, say so in the same breath as the number. Never describe a rank as good or bad without stating the field it was ranked against.
That matters here more than it would elsewhere. India ranks 38th in the world on innovation and 176th of 177 on environmental performance. A publication that prints the first and buries the second is a brochure, and readers work that out quickly.
Why some figures are marked
Every figure on this site carries a confidence marker. Most are simply the publisher’s own number. Some are labelled contested, and a few pending. This is not hedging — it reflects what the sources actually say:
- India’s economy is reported as both the 4th and the 6th largest in the world, by reputable outlets, for the same year. Both trace back to IMF data; they differ because of a currency move and a base-year revision, not because output changed.
- The Henley passport ranking was published as 75th, 78th, 80th and 81st within a single year, because the index is updated through the year and each update gets reported as if annual.
- Two different cities were each correctly named India’s cleanest in 2024–25, because that survey introduced a separate league for repeat winners.
- The Economist Intelligence Unit stopped publishing country-level Democracy Index scores, so we show no recent figure rather than repeat an uncorroborated one.
