The body that issues, extendsand lifts these directions is the RBI; it isalso the body that publishes the releases, which is why the four cases are visible atall. Deposit access is the practical stakefor account holders at the four banks, and the direction of travel in the figuresabove — broad account ownership, mid-dling regulatory-quality scores — is a re-minder that inclusion and supervision areseparate problems with separate remed-ies.Sources: Directions under Section 35A/56 – MotiramAgrawal Jalna Merchants Co-operative Bank Ltd, Jalna– Extension of Period · Directions under Section 35A/56– Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Chhatarpur– Extension of Period · Directions under Section 35A/56– Samarth Sahakari Bank Ltd, Solapur – Extension ofPeriod · Directions under Section 35A/56 – The BaghatUrban Co-operative Bank Limited, Solan – Extension ofPeriod · Account ownership at a financial institution ormobile-money provider · WJP Rule of Law Index 2025INFRASTRUCTUREFirst freight rake fromBogibeel to Bangladesh;logistics indexstands at 38th of 139The Press Information Bureau reports thefirst international freight consignment toBangladesh from Bogibeel in Dibrugarh sinceindependence, against exports of 22.3% of GDPand a 1.8% share of world merchandise exports. The Press Information Bureau has listed arelease reporting the first internationalfreight movement to Bangladesh from Bo-gibeel, in Dibrugarh, since independence([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319306)).Exports of goods and services were 22.3%of GDP in 2025 on World Bank data ([WorldBank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.EXP.GNFS.ZS)).India's share of world merchandise ex-ports was 1.8% in 2024, from UNCTAD viaOur World in Data ([Our World inData](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-of-global-merchandise-exports)).The current account balance was -0.4% ofGDP in 2025 ([World Bank /IMF](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/BN.CAB.XOKA.GD.ZS)).Where the corridor sits in the indexThe World Bank's Logistics PerformanceIndex placed India 38th of 139 in 2023, upsix places from 44th in 2018 and sixteenfrom 54th in 2014. Domestic travel survey listed as tourism index places India 31st of 110 economies

The Press Information Bureau has listed a National Domestic Travel Survey covering July 2025 to June 2026, against a World Economic Forum ranking that put India 31st of 110 on travel and tourism development, up eight places.

The Press Information Bureau has listed a release under the title National Domestic Travel Survey, July 2025 – June 2026 ([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319339)). As carried in the listing, the release gives the survey's title and reference period; the tables are not reproduced there.

The comparable external benchmark is the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index 2026, published in September 2026. It places India 31st of 110 economies with a score of 4.42 on a 1–7 scale, up eight places on the 2024 edition ([WEF](https://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_Travel_and_Tourism_Development_Index_2026.pdf)). The WEF prints the change against its recalculated 2024 result as +9 ranks and +4.3% in score — a restatement, not a straight comparison with the position published in 2024 — and the 2026 edition covers 110 economies.

Inbound, and what carries it Domestic travel does not appear in the WEF's cross-country tables. Inbound arrivals do: UN Tourism data published through Our World in Data record 98,24,000 international tourist arrivals for India in 2024 ([Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/international-tourist-arrivals)). Per-capita income stood at US$2,760 in 2025 on the World Bank's GNI per-capita measure, Atlas method ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GNP.PCAP.CD)).

Carrying capacity shows up in transport figures. India's rail network stood at 68,102.73 route-km in 2021, on World Bank and UIC data ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IS.RRS.TOTL.KM)). Liner shipping connectivity was 58.89 on an index where the maximum in 2004 equals 100, from UNCTAD via the World Bank in 2021 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IS.SHP.GCNW.XQ)).

Inbound travel also depends on the document a visitor holds. The Henley Passport Index placed India 75th of 199 passports in February 2026 with 56 destinations, up five places on January 2026. That figure is contested in the sense that it is a moving snapshot: 80th with 55 destinations in January 2026, with 78th and 81st also reported during the year, all from a starting point of 85th in 2025 ([Henley & Partners](https://www.henleyglobal.com/passport-index)).

Which body can move which number Domestic tourism measurement rests with the Union tourism ministry and state tourism departments, which commission and publish the survey series. Position on the WEF index rests partly on executive survey responses that the WEF itself collects. Rail route length and shipping connectivity are published by the World Bank and UNCTAD; changing either requires capital spending by the Union and state governments. A survey covering July 2025 to June 2026 will not, on its own, alter any of the four external figures above.

RBI lines up a ₹2.5 lakh crore one-day reverse repo for Tuesday

The Reserve Bank of India will conduct a one-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo auction of ₹2,50,000 crore on 6 October 2026, with consumer price inflation at 2.4% a year and reserves covering 7.88 months of imports.

The Reserve Bank of India has announced a Variable Rate Reverse Repo auction for Tuesday, 6 October 2026, with a notified amount of ₹2,50,000 crore and a one-day tenor, in a window from 09:30 to 10:00 and reversing on 7 October 2026. The central bank said the decision followed a review of current and evolving liquidity conditions, and referred to its operational guidelines for the auction ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63733)).

In the same set of releases, the RBI listed an auction of Government of India dated securities ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63730)); the listing as carried does not state its size or tenor.

What a one-day operation does

A reverse repo absorbs cash from the banking system. At a one-day tenor, it does so for a single day. The backdrop against which it is being run: consumer price inflation of 2.4% a year in 2025, on World Bank and MoSPI data ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG)); foreign-exchange reserves covering 7.88 months of imports in 2025 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/FI.RES.TOTL.MO)); and a current account balance of -0.4% of GDP ([World Bank / IMF](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/BN.CAB.XOKA.GD.ZS)).

The debt figures, and which one is being quoted

General government gross debt — Centre and states combined, on the IMF's definition, the one used for debt-sustainability analysis — was 83.4% of GDP in 2026, down from a peak near 89% in 2020. That number is marked contested in public use: the Union Budget's central-government figure is about 55.6% for FY2026-27. The two are not contradictory; they cover different entities ([IMF](https://www.imf.org/external/datamapper/GGXWDG_NGDP@WEO/IND)). A separate World Bank and IMF line puts central government debt at 46.5% of GDP, a 2018 figure ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/GC.DOD.TOTL.GD.ZS)).

On the flow side, investment was 34.6% of GDP in 2025 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.GDI.TOTL.ZS)); net foreign direct investment inflows were US$39.1 billion ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/BX.KLT.DINV.CD.WD)); remittances received were US$150.7 billion ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/BX.TRF.PWKR.CD.DT)).

What to watch

Liquidity operations are the RBI's to calibrate, and the monetary stance is set by its Monetary Policy Committee. One overnight auction moves the system's cash position for a day and nothing more. The figures that would signal a durable shift are the ones above — inflation, reserve cover, the external balance and the debt ratio — published by MoSPI, the RBI, the IMF and the World Bank.

HAL delivers 2,000th aero-engine from Koraput as defence R&D holds at 0.6% of GDP

The defence minister will open a ceremony at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's Koraput site for the delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine and launch the first fleet support ship at Visakhapatnam, with military expenditure at 2.3% of GDP.

Two Press Information Bureau releases set out the week's defence calendar. The defence minister will inaugurate the ceremony marking delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited at Koraput ([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319317)). At Visakhapatnam he will launch the first Fleet Support Ship, lay the keel of FSS-5 and open an upgraded slipway-4 together with a 300-tonne capacity Goliath crane ([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319308)).

Military expenditure was 2.3% of GDP in 2024, on SIPRI data published through the World Bank ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/MS.MIL.XPND.GD.ZS)). Arms imports stood at a SIPRI trend-indicator value of 1,16,80,00,000 in 2024 on the same channel ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/MS.MIL.MPRT.KD)).

The industrial base underneath

Manufacturing output was 13.5% of GDP in 2025 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NV.IND.MANF.ZS)). Research and development spending was 0.6% of GDP in 2020, with 259.3 researchers per million people the same year ([World Bank / UNESCO](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/GB.XPD.RSDV.GD.ZS), [World Bank / UNESCO](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.SCIE.RD.P6)). Residents filed 26,267 patent applications in 2021 ([World Bank / WIPO](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IP.PAT.RESD)).

India ranked 38th of 139 economies on WIPO's Global Innovation Index 2025, up one place on 2024 and up ten since 2020 — the top-ranked lower-middle-income economy, and a country that has over-performed relative to its income level for fifteen consecutive years. It ranks 52nd on innovation inputs and 32nd on outputs, and first in the world for ICT services exports ([WIPO](https://www.wipo.int/global_innovation_index/)).

What the delivery milestones do and do not settle

Engine deliveries and hull launches are outputs. Inputs are the R&D line and the researcher count, both published by UNESCO through the World Bank, and both of which a single production milestone does not shift. Indigenisation is a share-of-content question, and the import bill is measured by SIPRI's trend-indicator values rather than by events. The bodies that hold the levers are the Ministry of Defence as buyer, HAL as manufacturer, and the research establishments funded from the same budget; R&D spending is reported by UNESCO, and its level is set in the Union Budget.

RBI extends restricted-banking directions at four co-operative banks

The Reserve Bank of India has extended the period of directions issued under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 at co-operative banks in Jalna, Chhatarpur, Solapur and Solan, with 89% of adults holding a bank account.

The Reserve Bank of India has extended the period of directions at four co-operative banks, each announced in a separate release in the past 48 hours. The instrument in every case is the same: directions under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

The banks and the dates on the record:

- Motiram Agrawal Jalna Merchants Co-operative Bank Ltd, Jalna — directions issued on 10 April 2026 for six months, up to the close of business on 10 October 2026 ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63732)). - Sadbhav Nagrik Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh — directions issued on 6 October 2025 for six months to 7 April 2026, subsequently extended ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63731)). - Samarth Sahakari Bank Ltd, Solapur — directions issued on 6 October 2025 to 7 April 2026, last extended to 7 October 2026 ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63729)). - The Baghat Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Solan — directions issued on 6 October 2025, for six months from 8 October 2025 to 8 April 2026, subsequently extended ([RBI](https://www.rbi.org.in/scripts/BS_PressReleaseDisplay.aspx?prid=63728)).

Three of the four sets of directions date from October 2025 and one from April 2026. Each release records an extension; none records a fresh imposition, and the listings as carried do not state the new end dates for three of the four.

The inclusion side of the ledger

Access is broad. On World Bank Global Findex data for 2024, 89% of adults aged 15 and over had a bank account ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/FX.OWN.TOTL.ZS)); there were 79.4 mobile subscriptions per 100 people in 2024 ([ITU via World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IT.CEL.SETS.P2)); and 70% of the population used the internet in 2025 ([World Bank / ITU](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IT.NET.USER.ZS)).

Supervisory quality, as measured elsewhere, is weaker than access. On the World Bank's Worldwide Governance Indicators for 2025, regulatory quality was -0.17 and rule of law -0.13 on a scale running from -2.5 to +2.5, with government effectiveness at 0.50 and control of corruption at -0.28 ([World Bank](https://www.worldbank.org/en/publication/worldwide-governance-indicators)). The World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index 2025 placed India 86th of 143 countries with a score of 0.49, down seven places on 2024 ([WJP](https://worldjusticeproject.org/rule-of-law-index/downloads/WJPIndex2025.pdf)).

What would have to change

Lifting directions requires the individual institutions to meet capital and governance conditions to the supervisor's satisfaction. The body that issues, extends and lifts these directions is the RBI; it is also the body that publishes the releases, which is why the four cases are visible at all. Deposit access is the practical stake for account holders at the four banks, and the direction of travel in the figures above — broad account ownership, middling regulatory-quality scores — is a reminder that inclusion and supervision are separate problems with separate remedies.

First freight rake from Bogibeel to Bangladesh; logistics index stands at 38th of 139

The Press Information Bureau reports the first international freight consignment to Bangladesh from Bogibeel in Dibrugarh since independence, against exports of 22.3% of GDP and a 1.8% share of world merchandise exports.

The Press Information Bureau has listed a release reporting the first international freight movement to Bangladesh from Bogibeel, in Dibrugarh, since independence ([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319306)).

Exports of goods and services were 22.3% of GDP in 2025 on World Bank data ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.EXP.GNFS.ZS)). India's share of world merchandise exports was 1.8% in 2024, from UNCTAD via Our World in Data ([Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-of-global-merchandise-exports)). The current account balance was -0.4% of GDP in 2025 ([World Bank / IMF](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/BN.CAB.XOKA.GD.ZS)).

Where the corridor sits in the index

The World Bank's Logistics Performance Index placed India 38th of 139 in 2023, up six places from 44th in 2018 and sixteen from 54th in 2014. The components: 22nd on international shipments, 47th on infrastructure, 48th on logistics competence. India targets a top-25 place by 2030 on the same measure. The World Bank notes that a later methodology change means the index no longer ranks countries on a single overall score, so the 2023 position may stand as the last of its kind ([World Bank](https://lpi.worldbank.org/)).

Two capacity figures sit behind any new eastward corridor. Rail route length was 68,102.73 km in 2021, on World Bank and UIC data ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IS.RRS.TOTL.KM)). Liner shipping connectivity was 58.89 in 2021, on an index where the maximum in 2004 equals 100, from UNCTAD via the World Bank ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/IS.SHP.GCNW.XQ)).

What would have to change

Land-border freight depends on customs facilitation, warehousing and the last-mile rail link at each crossing. The bodies that hold those levers are the Union ministries responsible for railways and ports, the customs administration, and the government of Bangladesh as the counterparty for transit and landing arrangements. None of that is settled by a single consignment.

The scale question is arithmetic. Exports are 22.3% of GDP and India holds 1.8% of world merchandise exports; the LPI infrastructure component ranks 47th of the 139 economies assessed. A first rake on a restored route changes the map of available corridors. It does not change the aggregates until scheduled services and volumes follow, and the index that would record that is published by the World Bank.

Windergy India 2026 opens in Chennai with renewables at 24.1% of generation

A Union minister will inaugurate Windergy India 2026 in Chennai, as renewable sources supplied 24.1% of electricity generation in 2025 and the Climate Change Performance Index moved India down 13 places to 23rd of 67.

The Press Information Bureau has listed a release stating that Pralhad Joshi, Union minister, will inaugurate Windergy India 2026 in Chennai ([PIB](https://pib.gov.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=2319345)).

Renewable sources supplied 24.1% of India's electricity generation in 2025, on Ember and Energy Institute data published through Our World in Data ([Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-electricity-renewables)). Solar generation was 196 TWh in 2025 on Energy Institute data ([Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/modern-renewable-energy-consumption)). Electricity use per person was 1,423 kWh a year in 2025 ([Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/per-capita-electricity-demand)); 99.9% of the population had access to electricity in 2024 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.ELC.ACCS.ZS)); access to clean cooking fuel was 76.7% of the population in 2023 ([World Bank / WHO](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EG.CFT.ACCS.ZS)).

The indices moved the other way

The Climate Change Performance Index, published by Germanwatch, the New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network International, placed India 23rd of 67 in its 2026 edition with a score of 61.31 out of 100, down 13 places on 2025, and moved India from a high to a medium performer. The index leaves ranks 1 to 3 empty by design ([CCPI](https://ccpi.org/country/ind/)).

The Environmental Performance Index, from Yale, placed India 176th of 177 with a score of 22.46 — second from last, ahead only of Laos. That figure is contested: the Environment Ministry rejected the 2022 edition outright as methodologically unsound. India's ten-year change in score is positive, at +7.47 ([Yale EPI](https://epi.yale.edu/)).

On the World Economic Forum's Energy Transition Index 2026, India was 70th of 120 with a score of 54.9, up one place. The 2026 edition replaced the reliability indicators and added new ones, 44 in total, and the WEF describes the movement as advancing two places against a restated 2025 rank rather than the 71st published in the 2025 edition ([WEF](https://reports.weforum.org/docs/WEF_Energy_Transition_Index_2026.pdf)).

On air quality, India ranked 6th of 143 countries by population-weighted PM2.5 at 48.9 µg/m³ in IQAir's 2025 report, against a WHO guideline of 5 — an improvement on 2024, when it was 5th at 50.6. Delhi remained the most polluted capital at 82.2 µg/m³, itself a three-year low ([IQAir](https://www.iqair.com/world-air-quality-report)). CO₂ emissions were 2.17 tonnes per person, or 3,153.83 million tonnes in total, in 2024 ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.GHG.CO2.PC.CE.AR5)).

What would have to change

Generation capacity is one variable; grid integration, land access and finance are others. Research spending was 0.6% of GDP in 2020 and India had 259.3 researchers per million people ([World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/GB.XPD.RSDV.GD.ZS), [World Bank](https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.POP.SCIE.RD.P6)). The ministry running the deployment programme and the state electricity regulatory commissions that set tariffs and connection rules are the bodies that can move these numbers; Yale and the CCPI consortium are private publishers whose methods the Environment Ministry has disputed.
