Climate Change Performance Index
The Climate Change Performance Index, published every year at the UN climate summit by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and CAN International, rates the climate mitigation performance of 63 countries and the EU, which together account for more than 90% of global emissions. Since the 2018 edition the score combines greenhouse-gas emissions (40%), renewable energy (20%), energy use (20%) and climate policy (20%); ranks 1-3 are deliberately left empty because no country is judged to be doing enough. India was in the top 10 in every edition from CCPI 2020 to CCPI 2025 but fell to 23rd (score 61.31, 'medium') in CCPI 2026.
Ranks 1-3 left empty by design. India fell from 'high' to 'medium' performer.
