Index of Economic Freedom

The Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom scores countries from 0 to 100 on 12 factors grouped under rule of law, government size, regulatory efficiency and market openness, and ranks the countries it fully grades. It is a widely cited, though ideologically contested, gauge of how far policy and institutions support market-based activity, covering property rights, fiscal and regulatory conditions that matter to investors in India. In the 2026 edition India scored 52.5 and ranked 132nd of 176 countries, in the 'mostly unfree' band.
