Global Diplomacy Index
The Lowy Institute Global Diplomacy Index counts the embassies, high commissions, consulates, permanent missions and representative offices run by 66 countries and territories in Asia, the G20 and the OECD, and ranks them by total posts. It is a proxy for how much a country invests in its overseas diplomatic reach, not a measure of how effective that diplomacy is. In the 2024 release (data collected July-November 2023) India ranked 11th of 66 with 194 posts.
Publisher calls this the 2024 release (data collected July-November 2023; the interactive site files it under 2023). Methodology change: consulates in the same city as an embassy no longer counted separately, which lowered some countries' post totals versus 2021.
