India records more road deaths than any country on earth in absolute terms — roughly 11% of the global total — ahead of China and the United States. Deaths rose 25.5% from 1,46,133 in 2015 while reported crashes rose only 2.4%, meaning crashes have become markedly deadlier. Pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders are about 54% of victims; 69% of those killed are aged 18-45. India has committed to halving road deaths by 2030.
